Officers’ Mess

The dining room of the Officers’ Mess, King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, in Woolwich barracks was fitted out with dark sapele fitted side-boards with upstands behind, and a long row of fitted white cabinets were fitted in the adjacent anteroom. The pig’s head wearing a top hat with a cigarette holder in its mouth is a mascot of the troop, and is there to represent the ‘pig-sticking cup’ (on the table below the pig’s head) which was competed for in Victorian times when the Royal Horse Artillery were based in South Africa.
